No matter how frequently you fly, you are unlikely to ever get bumped from your JetBlue Airlines flight. If, however, you were bumped from your JetBlue flight, you may be owed compensation, and there are certain things you need to do.

If You Were Bumped from a JetBlue Airlines Flight

Go to a JetBlue desk and talk to a member of the staff there. They will try to get you on a different flight, even one from a different airline. They will most likely get you to your destination on time. If you were bumped close to the departure time and you were on a multi-stopover journey, it is possible that your checked baggage has been sent on to another destination. You should check with JetBlue to see if your baggage was sent on without you. If you are forced to make any purchases because you could not get on your flight and did not have your luggage, talk to JetBlue staff about reimbursement.

US Department of Transportation Bumped Passenger Rules

The U.S. Department of Transportation has rules concerning compensation for people who were involuntarily bumped from their flights. If you were on a domestic U.S. flight or an outbound international flight from the U.S. that help 30 or more passengers, you are covered by these rules.

If you were:

  • 4 or more hours late: you are owed 400% of your fare, with a maximum of $1,350
  • between 1 and 4 hours late: you are owed 200% of your fare, with a maximum of $675
  • less than 1 hour: JetBlue does not owe you compensation

If you purchased your ticket using frequent flyer miles, your compensation is determined by the lowest available price for a similar ticket.

This compensation is given for the inconvenience of being late to your destination. You may still use the ticket to get to your destination. If getting bumped has made your trip no longer possible, you can make a request for a refund.

Making a Request from JetBlue Airlines

If you have problems getting your baggage sorted out because of getting bumped, or if you want to request compensation for getting bumped, contact JetBlue Airlines' customer service. You can contact them by phone, by email, on Twitter, on Facebook support, and via their online help desk.
